Why are Sales of Anti-Drone Systems Rising Sharply in China?

Due to the sharp surge in the instances of drones having close encounters with commercial aircrafts and the rise in drone detection cases in recent times, the demand for anti-drone technology is growing rapidly in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Close encounters and near misses between manned and unmanned aircrafts have become extremely common in the last few years. Moreover, these encounters have caused many catastrophic accidents around the world during the past few years.

For example, a Chinese tourist breached security at the Taj Mahal in India in October 2018. He took his drone inside the area manned by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Due to these incidents, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which is the aviation security supervisory body of India, enacted a counter-drone plan in July 2018 for safeguarding airports from the threats posed by drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The plan emphasized the use of soft-skill-based methods for jamming or entrapping drones rather than destroying them. In November 2017, China put its first drone defense system in operation at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. This system produces electromagnetic interference for keeping drones outside the no-fly zones near the airport. This way the drone defense system is reducing the occurrence of accidents. Due to these benefits, anti-drone systems are increasingly being adopted in various APAC countries.

The growing usage of such anti-drone systems is causing the expansion of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) anti-drone market. According to the forecast of P&S Intelligence, a market research firm based in India, the market would generate a revenue of $2,105.0 million in 2025 and progress at an explosive CAGR of 47.8% between 2018 and 2025. There are mainly three types of anti-drone systems used in APAC namely hand-held, UAV-based, and ground-based.

Out of these, the usage of the ground-based anti-drone systems was found to be the highest in the APAC countries in the years gone by. In the coming years, the popularity of the UAV-based anti-drone systems would be the highest, primarily because of the rising user preference for advanced drone detection and UAV-defense methods over the conventionally used ones. In APAC, China is currently observing the highest utilization of counter-drones or anti-drone systems.
